Senator Russ Feingold Endorses Penny Bernard Schaber for the State Assembly
September 27, 2006
MIDDLETON---United States Senator Russ Feingold today endorsed Penny Bernard Schaber for the Legislature’s 57th Assembly District. Feingold cited Bernard Schaber’s steadfast position on campaign finance reform and her extensive background as a leading conservationist in the Fox Valley as key factors in his decision to back the first-time candidate.
“Penny Bernard Schaber will be a fresh and independent voice in the legislature,” Feingold (D-WI) said. “What’s going on in Madison is just plain wrong. Penny has the courage to stand up to the special interests currently running amuck in Madison.”
Bernard Schaber’s opponent, Representative Steve Wieckert (R-Appleton), voted against allowing a major reform measure, Senate Bill 1, to even get a debate before the State Assembly, effectively killing the bill and derailing one of the legislature’s most comprehensive reform efforts.
Feingold also highlighted Bernard Schaber’s strong commitment to protect the environment.
“I believe it is unfair to continue polluting our environment and expect our children to pick up the tab for cleaning up after our mess,” Feingold said. “Penny will fight to protect our most precious resource.”
Despite knowing how difficult it is to defeat a 10-year incumbent, Bernard Schaber has knocked on more than 13,000 doors. She has talked to neighbors about clean government, environmental protection and investing in schools.
“I’m proud to accept Senator Feingold’s endorsement,” said Bernard Schaber. “Senator Feingold is a strong and independent voice for us, and I hope to be the same kind of fighter in the legislature.
